Adverse Reaction:
Goitre and hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism (Iod-Basedow phenomenon) Hypersensitivity reactions include urticaria, angiooedema, purpura,fever, arthralgia, lymphadenopathy and eosinophilia. Prolonged use:Iodism (metallic taste, increased salivation, burning pain, coryza, swelling and inflammation of throat, irritated eyes, pulmonary oedema, skin rash and eruption).

POTASSIUM IODIDE - Systemic
1.Allergies-
Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to
Potassium Iodide. Also tell your healthcare care professional if you are
allergic to any other substances such as foods. preservatives or dyes.
2.Pregnancy-
Taking Potassium during pregnancy may cause thyroid or goiter in the
newborn infant.
3. Breast-feeding-
Potassium Iodide passes into breast milk and may cause skin rash and
thyroid problems in nursing babies
4.Children-
Potassium Iodide may cause skin rash and thyroid problems in infants
5. Older adults-
Although there is no specific information comparing use of potassium iodide
in the elderly with use in other age groups, this medicine is not expected to
cause different side effects in older people than it does in younger adults.
6. Other medicines-
Tell your doctor if you are using any of the following-
Amiloride or
Spironolamine or
Triamterene - use of these medicines with potassium iodide may increase
the amount of Potassium in the blood and increase the chance of side
effects
Antithyroid agents or
Lithium - use of these medicines with potassium iodide may increase the
chance of side effects
7. Other medical problems-
Make sure you tell your doctor if you have any other medical problems
especially-
High levels of potassium(hyperkalemia ) or
Myotonia congenita or
Tuberculosis - Potassium iodide may make the condition worse
Kidney disease -may cause an increase of potassium in the blood.
Overactive thyroid- ( uless you are taking this for this medical problem)-
Prolonged use of potassium iodide may be harmful to the thyroid gland
