Immunization against pneumococcal pneumonia and bacterimia caused by pneumococci

Local - erythema, induration and soreness at the injection site, usually of < 48 hrs duration, occur within 2 to 3 days after vaccination

Systemic - low grade fever and mild myalgia occur occasionally, usually within 24 hrs after vaccination

Hypersensitivity to any component of the vaccine Do not attempt immunization of patients < 10 days prior to or during treatment with immunosuppressive drugs or irradation

Defer administration in presence of acute respiratory or other active indications.

Pregnancy- Use only when clearly needed and when the potential benefits outweigh the potential hazard to the fetus. Ideally vaccinate women at high risk before pregnancy

Lactation- Excercise caution when administering to a nursing woman.

Children- Not recommended for children < 2 yrs of age

Dosage-

One 0.5ml dose. do not inject IV. avoid intradermal admin. administer SC or IM ( preferably in the deltoid muscle or lateral mid-thigh )
