Oral anticoagulants- the hypoptothrombinemic effects increased,possibly with bleeding.

INFORMATION UPDATE-

VITAMIN E INCREASES RISK OF PROSTRATE CANCER

Vitamin E supplements significantly increase the risk of prostrate cancer in men. According to research 34,887 men over the age of 50 years who received vitamin E , the risk of prostrate cancer increased by 17% compared to those who did not consume the vitamin.

Except in extreme rare cases of vitamin E deficiency, the supplement offers no clinical benefit at all of any disorder whatsoever. Due to aggressive promotion of by manufacturers in India,high dose of vitamin E is being prescribed irrationally. (MIMS).

Adverse Reaction:

Hypervitaminosis E symptoms include fatigue, weakness, nausea, headache, blurred vision, flatulance, diarrhoea.

Contra-Indications:

Vitamin E should not be administered IV,since the role of vitamin E in the deaths of 38 infants receiving the drugs remains unclear.

VITAMIN E -SYSTEMIC

1.Allergies-

Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to

Vitamin E. Also tell your healthcare care professional if you are allergic to any other

substances such as foods. preservatives or dyes.

2.Pregnancy-

It is especially important that you receive enough vitamins when you become

pregnant and you continue to receive the right amount of vitamins throughout

your pregnancy. The healthy growth of the fetus depend on a steady supply

of nutrients to the mother.

However, taking large amounts of dietary supplements during pregnancy may be

harmful to the mother and should be avoided

3. Breast-feeding-

It is especially important that you receive the right amounts of vitamins so that

your also get the vitamins needed to grow properly. You should also check

with your doctor if you are giving your baby an unfortified formula. In that case,

the baby will get the vitamins needed some other way.

However,taking large amunts of dietary supplement while breast feeding may

be harmful to the mother and/or baby and should be avoided

4.Children-

Problems with children have not been reported with intake of normal daily

recommended amounts.You should also check with your doctor if you

are giving your baby an unfortified formula. In that case the baby must get

the vitamins needed in some other way. Some studies have shown that

the premature infants may have low levels of vitamin E. Your doctor may

recommend a vitamin E supplement.

5.Older adults-

Problems in older adults have not been reported with normal daily recommended

amounts.

6. Other medicines-

Tell your doctor if you are using any other prescription or non-prescription

(Over-the counter) OTC medicine.

7. Other medical problems-

The presence of other medical problems may affect the use of Vitamin E.

Make sure you tell your doctor if you have any other medical problems

especially-

Bleeding problems- vitamin E when taken in dose greater than 800 units

a day for long periods of time, may make the condition worse.

The mechanism of action of Vitamin E is not clear. Many of its actions are related to antioxidant properties.Vitamin E may protect cellular constituents from oxidation and prevent formation of toxic oxidation products; it preserves red blood cells(RBC) wall integrity and protect them against hemolysis; it acts as a cofactor in enzyme systems
