Pharmacology:
Acetylcysteine reduces the viscocity of mucus and other secretions by reducing disulfide bonds in proteins and altering the configurations to improve flow characteritistics. It gets readily converted to cysteine and by stimulating hepatic glutathione synthesis. it effectively prevents acute acetaminophen- induced hepatoxicity.
Pharmacokineticvs:
Following an oral dose of 400mg acetycysteine , a mean maximum plasma level concentration of310 mg/l was acheived in one hour. Following intravenous administration of doses greater than 500mg/litre, a mean steady level of about 35mg/litre was maintained after 12 hours. The termination half-life of reduced acetylcysteine is 6.25 hours. About 70% of total body clearance is renal.
