Adverse Reaction:
Transient hypotension with loss of consciousness CNS overstimulation, palpitations, headache, hypertension, dizziness, nausea, nervousness, tremor, weakness, pallor, dysuria, insomnia, convulsions.
Contra-Indications:
CVS disease, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, concomittant MAOIs. Special precautions: BHP, lactation, pregnancy, elderly, renal impairment.

Indications:
Nasal decongestant
Dosage:
Adults and children over 12 years - 120mg every 12 hours. Do not crush or chew tablets.
Patient Information:
1. Patients with hypertension or other cardiovascular diseases, hyperthyroidism, diabestes
mellitus, or prostrate hypertrophy should use onlywith medical advice.
2. Topical: notify physician of insomnia, dizziness, weakness, tremor, irregular heart beat. Stinging, burning, sneezing, increased nasal discharge or drying of the nasal mucosa may occur.
3. Do not share container with other patients. do not allow the tip of the container to touch the nasal passage. Discard after medicationis no longer required.
4. Drops- recline on a bed and hang your head over the edge; remain in this position for several minutes after using the drops, turning the head from side to side.
5. Allergies- tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to pseudoephedrine, or simlar medicines. Also tell your doctor if you are allergic to any other substances, such as foods, preservatives or dyes.
6.Pregnancy - studies in animals have shown that pseudoephedrine causes a reduction in average weight, length, and rate of bone formation in animal fetus.
7.Breast feeding- pseudoephedrine passes into breast milk andmay cause unwanted effects in nursing babies.
8. Children - pseudoephedrine may be more likely to cause side effects in infants , especially newbortrn and premature infants than in older adults.
9. Elderly- no sepecific information comparing use of pseudoephedrine in the elderly with use in other older age groups.
10. Other medicines -
Beta blockers - pseudoephedrine may decrease the effcets of these medicines, and also taking with betablockers amy increase the sude effects
Cocaine - use cocaine with pseudoephedrine may decrease the effect of one of these medicines on the heart and increase the chance of side effects
MAOI- taking pseudoephedrine while you are taking or within 2 weeks of taking MAOI may increase the chance of serious side efects.
11. Other medical problems -
Tell your doctor if you have any other medical problems especially -
Diabetes mellitus
Enlarged prostrate or
Heart or blood vessel disease or
High blood pressure - pseudoephedrine may make the condition worse
Overactive thyroid
12. Missed dose -
If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. however, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double doses.
13. Storage -
Keep out of reach of children. Store away from heat or direct sunlight. Do not store
the capsule in bathroom, near the kitchen sink, or in other damp places.
14. Outdated medicines -
Do not keep outdated medicine or medicine no longer needed. Be sure that any
discarded medicine is out of reach of children.
Pharmacology/ Pharmacokinetics:
Pharmacology: Decongestants stimulate alpa adrenergic receptors of vascular smooth muscle (vasoconstriction, pressor effects, nasal decongestion). Constriction in the mucous membranes results in their shrinkage; this promotes drainage, thus improving ventilation and stuffy feeling.

Pregnancy and lactation:
Pregnancy: Give only when clearly needed. Lactation: Contraindicated in the nursing mother.
