For temporary relief of burning and irritation due to dryness of the
eye and for use as a protection against further irritation for the
temporary relief of minor irritations of the eyes or to exposure
to wind or sun.
Opthalmic surgical aid for surgical procedures.
Surgical aid - 2% soln - an opthalmic surgical aid in anterior segment surgical procedures including cataract extraction and intraocular lens implantation 2.5 % solution- for professional use in gonioscopic examinations
Adverse Reaction:
Although well tolerated a transcient postoprtatve increase in IOP has been reported
Other reaction- include postoperative inflammatory reactions ( iritis, hypopyon ) corneal edema and corneal decompensation
Contra-Indications:
Special precautions:
Intraocular pressure IOP - transcient increase in IOP may occur following surgery, because of preexisting glaucoma or due to surgery itself . if the postoperative IOP increases above expected values, administer appropiate therapy
Dosages/ Overdosage Etc:
Indications:
Opthalmic surgical aid for surgical procedures.
Surgical aid - 2% soln - an opthalmic surgical aid in anterior segment surgical procedures
including cataract extraction and intraocular lens implantation
2.5 % solution- for professional use in gonioscopic examinations
Administration and Dosage-
Anterior segment surgery - Carefully introduce into the anterior chamber using a 20-gauge
or similar cannula. The 2% solution may be used prior to or delivery of the crystalline
lens.
Injection of 2% solution prior to delivery will provide additional protection to the corneal
endothelium and other ocular tissues.
The 2% solution may also be used to coat an intraocular lensand tips of surgical
instruments prior to implantation surgery.
Gonioscopic examinations- Fill gonoscopic prism with 2.5% solution, as necessary
Storage/Stability- If the solution dries on optical surfaces , let them stand in cool
water before cleansing. If the soluton changes color or becomes cloudy, do not use.
Not to use with hot laser treatment as solution will occur.
To avoid contamination do not touch tip of container to any surface. Replace cap
after using. Keep container tightly closed .
Store at room temperature 15C to 30C (59-86F).
Avoid excessive heat over 60C(140F). Protect from light.
Dosage:
2% Solution may be injected into chamber prior to or folowing the delivery of the crystalline lens.

Pharmacology/ Pharmacokinetics:
Pharmacology-
Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose is an isotonic, non-pyrogenic viscoelastic solution
with a high molecular weight (> 80,000 daltons) . It maintains a deep chamber during
anterior segment surgery and allows for efficient manipulations with less than trauma
to the corneal endothelium and other other tissues. The viscoelasticity helps the
vitreous face to be pushed back, preventing formation of a post operative flat chamber.
It is also used as a demulgent agent
