Betamethasone- It there is a significant systemic absorption , neomycin sulfate may increase the resp depressant effects of neuromuscular blockers
Indication:
Corticosteroid -reponsive drmastoses with secondary infection
Adverse Reaction:
Betamethasone- Prologed use may cause local atrophic changes in the skin eg. thinning , striae and dilatation of superficial blood vessels.
Local skin burning sensation, pruritus, pigmentation changes, allergic contact dermatitis and hypertrichosis.
Opthalmic prepn. Corneal ucleation,increased intraocular pressure, mydriasis, pitosis, epithelial punctate keratitis
Contra-Indications:
Betamethasone-
Hypersensitivity acne vulgaris, perianial & genital pruritus
Primary cutaneous viral infections Not to be used in otitis extrena complicated by ear-drum perforation
Treatment of primary infected skin caused by fungi or bacteria
Primary or secondary infections due to yeast or secondary infections due to pseudomonas or Proteus species
Children below 2 year
Opthmalic preparations - not to be used in patients with glaucoma or hepatis keratitis
Special precautions-
Avoid prolonged treatment as it may lead to systemic corticosteroid effects even without occulsion.
Avoid prolonged excessive appln to the facial areas
Withdraw treatment if there is spread of infection
Risk of glaucoma development if prepn, enter eyes .
Regular monitoring is recommended when used for psoriasis due to treatment tolerance, rebound relapses, generalized pustular psoriasis or systemic toxicity Increased risk of contact sensitization when used for extended period or recurrently
Pregnancy and lactation
Opthalmic preparations- Monitor intraocular pressure, contaract formation of unsuspected infections,
Evaluate treatment if there is no clinical improvement after 7 days Not to be used for undiagnosed red eye
Dosages/ Overdosage Etc:
Indication-
Corticosteroid -reponsive drmastoses with secondary infection
Dosage-
Apply 2-3 times a day Usual treatment duration upto 5 days/course
