Induction of general anesthesia 

Transceient skeletal muscle movements, transceint  venous pain.
 Hyperventilation hypotension,apnea of short duration with  spontaneous recovery, larygnospasm, hiccoups,snoring.
 

Hypersens to the drug.

Special precaution:
Pregnancy, lactation.

 

Indication:
Induction of general anesthesia

Dosage:
For IV use only. Individualise dose
Adults and children over 1 years- 0.2 to 0.6mg/kg. The usual induction dose is 0.3mg/kg,
injected over 30 to 60 seconds
 

Pharmacology:
Etomidate, a nonbarbiturate hypnotic without analgesic activity, has  fewer  cardiovascular and
respiratory depressants effects than the thiopental sodium.

Pharmacokinetics:
Injection IV produces hypnosis rapidly, usually within 1 minute. Etomidate is rapidly metabolised in the liver. Plasma level of unchanged drug decrease rapidly upto 30 minutes following injection and thereafter more slowly with a half-life of about 75 minutes.

 

Pregnancy:
Use only when clearly needed.

Lactation:
Use caution while administering to  anursing mother.

Children:
afety and effeicacy for use inchildren has not been established.
