Adverse Reaction:
Most common-
Creams - burning sensation
Solution- blisters, eosinophillia, erythema, facial edema
Metabolic- acidosis, increase in serum chloride
Respiratory - hyperventilation, tachypneas
Contra-Indications:
Warnings-
Renal function impairment- use with caution in patients with acute renal failure
Superinfection- fungal colonization in and below the eschar may occur concomittantly with
reduction in bacterial growth in the burn wound
Pregnancy- cream preparation is not recommended in women of child bearing potential
Lactation- Observe caution if use required
Children- for mafenide cream , use the same administration and dosage as adults
Patient Information:
1. Advice patients to notify their doctor if conditions worsens or irritation occurs
2. Cream - bathe burned area daily, a whirlpool bath is particularly helpful.
Continue treatment until healing occurs or until the site is ready for grafting

1.Allergies-
Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to
Mafenide ,acetolzolamide, oral antidiabetics, dichlorphenamide,
methazolamide or thiazide diuretics. Also tell your healthcare care
professional if you are allergic to any other substances such as foods.
preservatives or dyes.
2.Pregnancy-
Studies have not been done in humans or animals. However,use is not
recommended in women during their child bearing years unless the burn
area covers more than 20% of the total surface.
3. Breast-feeding-
Mafenide when used on skin and /or burns is absorbed into the mothers
body. It is not known whether this medicine passes into breast milk.
Be sure that you have discussed the risks and benefits with your doctor.
4.Children-
Use of Mefanide is not recommended in premature or new born infants up to
2 months of age.
5.Older adults-
There is no specific information comparing use of Mafenide in the elderly
with use in other age groups
6. Other medicines-
Tell your doctor if you are using any other prescription or
non-prescription (Over-the counter) OTC medicine.
7. Other medical problems-
Make sure you tell your doctor if you have any other medical problems
especially-
Blood problems- use of mefanide may make the condition worse
Glucose -6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) - use of mafenide in persons
with this condition may result in hemolytic anemia
Kidney disease- or
Lung problems or
Metabolic acidosis - use of mefanide may increase th risk of of side
effects called metabolic acidosis
