Adverse Reaction:
Upon application or removal of beads, transitory pain, bleeding, blistering and eryhthema have
occured
Severe infection have been associated with administration in both diabetic and imunosuppressed patients
Contra-Indications:
Warning -
For external application only - avoid contact with skin.
Wound packing- Do not pack wounds tightly. Allow expansion of beads. Maceration of surrounding skin may result if occlusive dressings are used.
Removal - do not use dextranomar in deep fistulas, sinus tracks, or any body cavity where
complete removal is not possible.
Edema reduction- wounds may appear larger during the first few days of treatment due to
reduction of edema
Dry wounds- not effective in cleaning dry wounds
Pregnancy- Consult your doctor before using in pregnant women
Lactation- Consult your doctor before administering to a breast feeding woman.
Dosages/ Overdosage Etc:
Indication-
Topical ulcers
Dosage-
Apply debride and clean the wound ( dextranomer not an enzyme and will not debride)
Leave cleaned area moist. apply to a thiickness of about 1/4 inch to acheive desired effects.
Cover area with a dry dressing and close on all sides
Removal - dextranomer changes colors and should be removed. Removal best acheived by irrigation. Vigorous irrigation may be necessary at times to remove patches that adhere to the skin

Pharmacology-
Dextranomers abitlity to remove exudates rapidly and continuously from the surface of the wound results in a reduction of inflammation and edema.
Dextranomer is a hydrophilic dextran polymer in the form of tiny beads or paste. The hydrophylic beads absorb appropoximately 4ml of fluid water per 1g of beads
