Drug interactions- summary-
Cevimeline +
Betablockers - administer with caution to patients taking betablockers because of possibilty
of conduction disturbances
Parasympathomimetics-
drugs with parasympathometic effects administered concurrently with cevimeline
may have additive effects
Antimuscarinics-
cevimeline interfere with desirable antimuscararinic effects of drugs used concomittantly
Adverse Reaction:
Adverse reactions-
Headache 14% sinusitis 12% uper respiratory tract infection 10%
Dyspepsia 7% abdominal pain 7% urinary tract infection 6%
Coughing 6% pharynigitis 5% vomiting 4% injury 4%
Back pain 4% rash 4% conjuntivitis 4% dizziness 4%
Bronchitis 4% Arthalgia 3% fatigue 3% pain 3%
Insomnia 2% hot flushes 2% rigors 1% anxiety 1%
Contra-Indications:
Uncontrolled asthma, hypersensitivity to the drug
Special Precautions-
Cardiovascular disease - Cevimeline to be used with caution and under close medical
supervision in patients with a history of cardiovascular disease eg angina pectoris
or myocardial infaction
Pulmonary disease- to be usd with caution in patients with controlled asthma, chronic bronchitis,
or chronic obstructive disease
Ocular - Cevimeline may cause visual disturbances especially at night.
Caution to be excercised while driving or performing hazardous tasks
Toxicity - cevimeline toxicity is characterised by headache, visual disturbances , lacrimation,
rspiratory distress,sweating, GI spasm
Hazardous tasks- caution to be excercised while driving at night or performing hazardous
tasks in reduced lighting
Pregnancy- cevimeline should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit
justifies the potential risk to the fetus.
Lactation- decide whether to discontinue nursing or the drug depending on the importance
of the drug to the mother
Children- safety and efficacy in children has not been established
Elderly- special care to be excercised when cevimeline is used in elderly taking
into consideration greater frequency of decreased hepatic, renal or cardiac function
and of concomitant disease or use of other drugs.
Dosages/ Overdosage Etc:
Indication-
Dry mouth
Dosage-30mg 3 times a day.
Not enough data available to support doses greater 30mg 3 times a day.
Patient Information:
1. Patients should be informed that cevimeline may cause visual disturbances, especially
at night and that coould impair their ability to drive
2. If patients sweat excessively while taking cevimiline dehydration may develop.
patients should drink extra water and consult their doctor
