Respiratory distress syndrome
Calfactrant is indicated of the prevention of respiratory distress syndome RDS in premature
infants at high risk of RDS and for the rescue of premature infants who develop RDS
Adverse Reaction:
Common adverse reactions-
Apnea 60% patient ductus arteriosus 45% intracranial haemorrhage 27%
Sepsis 20% pulmonary air leaks 10% pulmonary intestitial emphysema 6%
Pulmonary haemorhage 6% necrotizing enterocolitis 5%
Contra-Indications:
Special Precautons-
Oxygenation /lung complications- following administration of calcifactant patients should be
carefully monitored so that oxygen therapy and ventilarory support can be modified in response
to changes in respiratory status
Transceint effects- transient episode of reflux of calfacrant into the endothecial tube,cyanosis,
bradycardia or airway obstruction have occured during the dosing procedures.
These events require stopping calfracant admin and taking appropiate measures to alleviate
the condition. After the patient is stable dosing can proceed with appropiate monitoring
Intensive care- optimal care of premature infants at risk of RDS require an acute care unit organized
staff and equipped with experienced with incubation , ventilation management and general care of
these patients.
Pregnancy- calfactrant is not indicated for use in adults
Lactation- calfactant is indicated for use in adults-

Dosage-
For Intracheal administation only
Each dose of calfactrant is 3ml/kg body weight at birth
Calfactrant has been administred every 12 hours for a total of upto 3 doses.
