Drug intreactions-
Antiovulatary drugs - no well controlled studies have been performed in patients taking
antoovulaturory drugseg oral contraceptives
Indication:
Varicose veins
Adverse Reaction:
Hypersensitivity reactions- such as hives, asthma, hay fever and anaphylactic shock have been
reported
Local reactions- consisting of pain, urticaria, or ulceration may occur at the site of injection.
a permanent discoloration may remain along the path of the scelerosed vein segment.
Sloughing and necrosis of tissue may occur following extravasation of the drug
Contra-Indications:
Contraindicated in previously hypersensitivity reactions to the drug
Special Precautions-
Sodium tetradecyl sulfate should be handled by a healthcare provider familiar with venous
anatomy and diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the venous system and proper
injection tecnique.
Severe adverse local reactions including the local tissues following extravasation. Therefore
extreme care in IV needle placement and use of minimal effective volume at each injection site are important
Deep vein thrombosis/pulmonary embolism- because of danger of thrombosis extention into venous system, carry out through preinjection evaluation of vulvular compentency and slowly inject a small amount over 2ml of the preparation into varicosity.
Deep venous potency must be determined by angiography or invasive testing, such as deep ultra sound.
Arterial disease- excrecise extreme caution in the presence of underlying arterial disease
such as marked peripheral arteriosclerosis ot thromboangitis obliterans (Buerger disease)
Hypersensitivity reactions- emergency resuscitation equipment should be immeiately available. Allergic reactions including fatal anaphylaxis have been reported
Pregnancy- administer sodium tetradecyl sulfate to a pregnant woman only if clearly needed.
Lactation- excercise caution when administered to a nursing woman
Children- safety and efficacy in children have not been established
Dosages/ Overdosage Etc:
Indication-
Varicose veins
Dosage-
Sodium tretradecyl sulfate injection is for intrvenous IV use only
In general 1% solution will be found most useful with the 3% solution preferred for larger
varicosities
Keep the dose small using 0.5 to 2ml ( preferably 1ml maximum ) for each injection and not
to exceed the maximum 10ml single treatment
Do not include heparin in the same syringe as sodium tetradecyl sulfate because they are
incomptatible
Pregnancy and lactation:
Pregnancy-
Administer sodium tetradecyl sulfate to a pregnant woman only if clearly needed.
Lactation-
Excercise caution when administered to a nursing woman
Children-
