NICOTINE- Systemic
1.Allergies-
Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to
nicotine. Also tell your healthcare care professional if you are allergic to
any other substances such as foods. preservatives or dyes.
2.Pregnancy-
Nicotine, whether from smoking or from transdermal patch is not
recommended during pregnancy. Studies in humans have shown
that miscarriages have occurred in pregnant women using nicotine
replacement products. In addition, studies in animals have shown that
nicotine can cause harmful effects in the fetus
3. Breast-feeding-
Nicotine passes into breast milk and may cause unwanted effects in the
baby. It may be necessary to stop breast-feeding during treatment
4.Children-
Small amounts of nicotine can cause serious harm in children. Even nicotine
patches contain enough nicotine to cause problems to children
5.Older adults-
Nicotin gum and patches have been used in a limited number of patients
of over 60 years of age or older, and have not been shown to cause different
side effects or problems in older people, than in younger adults.
6. Other medicines-
Tell your doctor if you are using any of the following -
Aminophylline or
Insulin or
Propoxyphene or
Propranol or
Theophylline - stopping smoking may increase the effects of these
medicines, the amount of medicine you need to take may change
7. Other medical problems-
Make sure you tell your doctor if you have any other medical problems
especially-
Dental problems or
Diabetes or
Heart or blood vessel disease or
High blood pressure or
Inflamation of mouth or throat or
Irriated skin with parches only or
Overactive thyroid or
Pheochromocytoma or
Stomach ulcer
Temporomandibular (jaw) disorder with gum only- nicotine gum
or patches make make the condition worse.
