NARCOTIC ANALGESICS-
eg. Codeine, Hydrocodone, Morphine, Pentazocaine, Pentoxyphene etc.
1.Allergies-
Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to
any narcotic analgesics. Also tell your healthcare care professional if you
are allergic to any other substances such as foods. preservatives or dyes.
2.Pregnancy-
Although studies on birth decfects have not been done in pregnant woman,
these medicines have not been reported to cause birth defects.
3. Breast-feeding-
Narcotic analgesics have not been reported to cause problems in nursing
babies. However, when the mother is taking large amonuts of methadone,
the nursing baby may become dependent on the medicine. You must follow
the doctors advice
4.Children-
Breathing problems may be especially to occur in children younger than
2 years of age. Also, unusual excitement or restlessness may be more
likely to occur in children receiving these medicines
5.Older adults-
Elderly people are more sensitive to the effects of narcotic medicines.
This may incease the chance of side effects especially breathing
problems, during treatment.
6. Other medicines-
Tell your doctor if you are using any of the following-
Carbamazepine - propxyphene may increase the blood levels of
carbamazepine which increase the chance of serious side effects
CNS depressants or
Monoamine oxidase inhibitors - taken within the past two weeks or
Tricyclic antidepressants - the chance of side effects may be increased,
the combination with mepiridine and MAO inhibitors is dangerous
Naltrexone - narcotics will not be effective in people taking naltrexone
Rifampicin - rifampicin decreases the effect of methadone and may
cause withdrawal symptoms
Zidovudine- morphine may increase the blood levels of zidovudine
and increase the chance of side effects
7. Other medical problems-
Make sure you tell your doctor if you have any other medical problems
especially-
Alcohol abuse
Drug dependent or
Emotional problems - chance of side effects may be increased , withdrawal
symptoms may occur
Brain damage or
Emphysema , asthma or other chronic lung disease or
Enlarged prostrate or problems with urination or
Gall bladder disease or gall stones - some side effects of narcotic analgesics
can be dangerous if these conditions are present
Colitis or
Heart disease or
Kidney disease or
Liver disease or
Underactive thyroid - the chance of side effects may be increased
Convulsions- some of the narcotic analgesics can cause convulsuions
