Leishmaniasis - Kala-azar
Sodium stibogluconate, an organic pentavalent compound is used for
visceral leishmaniasis
Adverse Reaction:
Side effects-
Anorexia, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, ECG changes,
coughing, headache, lethargy, arthalgia, myalgia,
rarely jaundice, flushing, bleeding from nose or gums
Contra-Indications:
Cautions-
Intravenous injections must be given slowly over 5 minutes
(to reduce risk of local thrombosis) and stopped if coughing
and substanitial pain
Treat intercurrent infections eg pneumonia, monitor ECG before and
during treatment,heart disease (withdraw if conduction disturbances
occur, predisposition to QT interval prolongation(including concomittant
use with drugs that prolong QT interval
Hepatic impairment
use with caution
Renal impairment
avoid in significant impairment

Leishmaniasis - Kala-azar
Dose-
The dose is 20mg/kg daily by intramuscular or intravenous injection
for 28 days in visceral leishmamiasis and for 20 days in cutaneous
infection. The dosage varies with different geopraphical regions and
expert advice should be attained
Pregnancy and lactation:
Pregnancy-
Manufacturer advices use only if potential benefits outweighs risk
Breast feeding-
amount probably too small to be harmful
