Drug Interaction:
MAOIs potentiates action, leading to anxiety, confusion, depression of respiration & coma.
Phenothiazine, hypnotics, neuroleptics, alcohol and other CNS depressants potentiates
respiratory depression.
Hydroxyzine,tricyclic antidepressants, NSAIDs, anticonvulsants
carbamazepine and steroids enhance analgesic effect.
Adverse Reaction:
Respiratory depression,withdrawal syndrome.
Dependence,hepatic/renal dysfunction,
Pulmonary oedema,acute thrombocytopenia
Change in libido,sedation,mental clouding,
Alteration of mood. Miosis,constipation,
Hypothermia,sweating, drymouth.
Raised serum levels of liver enzymes,cholesterol, growth harmone and calcitonin.
Reduced levels of testostereone in males,
Altered glucose tolerance,and higher resting levels of insulin.
Contra-Indications:
Pre-existing respiratory disease,head injury,biliary colic.
Special precautons:
Hypothyroidism,liver/renal disease,BHP,neonates,alcoholics, withdraw gradually.
