Pharmacology/ Pharmacokinetics:
Pharmacology:
Benzodiapines appear to potentiate the effects of gamma-aminobutyrate(GABA). The activity of benzodiapines involve the following sites: spinal cord(muscle relaxation),brain stem, cerbellum, limbic and cortical areas.
Phamacokinetics:
Benzodiapines are readily absorbed following oral administration.
Interaction with Food:
Not available
Pregnancy and lactation:
Pregnancy:
Avoid use during pregnancy. Advise patients that if they become pregnant or plan to become pregnant, they should discuss the desirability of discontinuing the drug, with the doctor.
Lactation:
Benzodiapines are excreted in breast milk. Since neonates metabolise benzodiapines more slowly, accumulation of the drug and the metabolites to toxic levels is possible.
Children:
Initial dose should be small and dosage increment should be gradual, according to the response of the patient.
