Contra-Indications:
Bronchopulmnary disease, heptic insufficiency, gastroenteritis.
Special precautions: Strong unpleasant breath. May be habit forming, avoid sudden withdrawal,
Patient Information:
PARALDEHYDE-
1. May cause GI upset, take with food or mix with milk or iced fruit juice to improve taste.
2.Avoid alcohol and other sedatives while taking the drug
3. May cause drowsiness; use caution while driving or performing tasks requiring alertness
4. Do not use paraldehyde in any plastic container; do not dispense with a plastic spoon or syringe
5. Do not use if the liquid has a brownish color or a strong vinegar odor.
6.Allergies- Tell your doctor if you had any unusual or allergic reactions to paraldhyde Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any other substances such as foods, or drinks.
7. Pregnancy- Paldehyde crosses the placenta . Studies on birth defects havenot been done in humans or animals. Use of paraldehyde during labor may cause breathing problems in the new born
8. Breast feeding- Paraldehyde has not been reported to cause problems in nursing babies
9. Children- Although there is no specific information comparing paraldhyde in children with use in other age groups this medicine is not expected to cause different side efects or problms in children than it does in inadults
10. Older adults- No specific information available comparing use of parldehyde in the elderly with use in other age groups
11. Other medicines- Tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following- Other CNS depressant drugs or Tricylic antidepressants - the CNS depressant effects of either these medicines may be increased Disulfram - higher blod levels of paraldehyde may occur, increasig the chance of side effects.
12. Other medical problems- Tell your doctor if you are having any of the following medical problems- Alcohol abuse or Drug abuse or depndence - dependence on paraldehyde may develop Colitis - praldehyde used rectlly may make the condition worse Emphysema- asthma ,bronchitis or other chronic lung disease occur increasing the chnceof side effects Livr disease- higher blood levls of paraldehyde m occur, increasig the chance of side effects nea - zolpidem my make thse conditions worse Kidney disease or Liver disease -higher blood levels of zolpidem may result , increasing the chance of side effects Gastroenteritis- or Stomach ulcer - paraldehyde taken by mouth may make the condition worse
13. Mixed dose- If you are taking this medicine regularly and miss a dose take itright away if you remember within an hour or so of the mssed dose. However if you remeber litle later, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal schedule Do not double doses.
11. Storage - Keep out of reach of children. Store away from heat or direct sunlight. Keep the medicine from freezing
12. Outdated medicines - Do not keep outdated medicine or medicine no longer needed. Be sure that any discarded medicine is out of reach of children.
Pharmacology/ Pharmacokinetics:
Pharmacology: Paradehyde produces nonspecific reversible depression of the CNS. With the usual therapeutic doses, it has little efect on respiration and blood pressure.
Pharmacokinetics: The drug is rapidly absorbed after oral administration. Peak serum levels are attained 30 to 60 minutes following oral use. Paraldehyde acts rapidly and produces sleep within 10 to 15 minutes after a therapeutic dose, and sleep lasts for about 8 to 12 hours
