Pharmacology/ Pharmacokinetics
Drug Interaction:
Alcohol or CNS depressants eg barbiturates, narcotics- exaggerated depression effects will
occur when used concomittantly.
Anticoagulants oral- Ethchlovynol may decreae the hypoprombinemic effect of the anti-coagulant.
Dosage adjustment may be required at initiation and discontinuation of therapy
Indication:
Hypnotic - short term use
Adverse Reaction:
Vomiting, gastric upset, nausea, aftertaste. Dizziness, facial numbness. Thrombocytopenia.
Cholestatic jaundice, urticaria, rash. Blurred vision, hypotension, hangover.
Contra-Indications:
Hypersensitivity, porphyria.
Special precautions:
CNS effect- do not use for management of insomnia in presence of pain. Performing hazardous tasks, tartrazine sensitivity
Dosages/ Overdosage Etc:
Indications:
Hypnotic - short term use
Dosage:
Usual dose is 500mg at bed time. 750mg may required for some patients whose response to
500mg is inadequate or for patients being changed from barbiturates or nonbarbiturate hypnotic
Patient Information:
1. May cause drowsiness,dizziness, blurred vision, observe caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness.
2. Avoid alcohol and other CNS depressants. Do not exceed prescribed dosage.
3. Symtoms of giddiness, ataxia or GI upset may be reduced if the drug is taken with food.
4.Allergies-
Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to ethchlovynol or related products.
Also tell your doctor if youare allergic to any other substances, such as foods, presrvatives or dyes.
5.Pregnancy -
Ethclorvynol has not been studied in pregnant women. However use of ehthchlorvynol during the first 6 mths of is not recommended because studies in animals have shown that high doses of ethchlorvynol increase chances of still births and decrease the cance of newborn from surviving .
Taking ethchlorvynol during 6 mths of pregnancy may cause slow heart beat, shortness of breath , troubled breathing or wthdrawal side effects in the new born
baby.
6.Breast feeding-
It is not known whether chlorvyol pases into breast milk
7 Children -
Studies done only in adults patients and there is no specific information comparing the use of chlorvynol in children with use in other age groups
8. Elderly-
May increase the chance of side effects during treatment
9. Other medicines -
Let your doctor know what other medicines you are taking any of the following, so that he can advice you accordingly.
Anticoagulants - ethchlorvynol may change the amount of anticoagulant you need to take
Central Nervous System CNS depressants- or
Tricyclic antidepresants - using these medicines together may increase the CNS and other
depressants effects.
11. Other medical problems -
Tell your doctor if you have any other medical problems especially -
Alcohol abuse or
Drug abuse ordependence - dependenc of ethchlovynol may develop
Kidney disease or
Liver disease - higher bloodlevels ofethchlovynol may result and increae the chance of side ffects.
Mental depression or
Porphyria - ethchlorvynl may make the condition worse
12. Missed dose -
If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. however, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double doses.
13. Storage -
Keep out of reach of children. Store away from heat or direct sunlight. Do not store
the capsule in bathroom, near the kitchen sink, or in other damp places.
14. Outdated medicines -
Do not keep outdated medicine or medicine no longer needed. Be sure that any
discarded medicine is out of reach of children.

Pharmacology:
Ethchlorvynol has a seadative-hypnotic, anti-convulsant and muscle relaxant properties. It
produces EEG patterns similar to those produced by barbiturates.
Pharmacokinetics:
Rapidly absorbed from GI tract, peak plasma concentration occur within 2 hours after a single
oral fasting dose. Within 24 hours,33% of a single 500mg dose is excreted in the urine as
metabolites

Use with caution when administering to a nursing mother.
