Drug Interaction:
Cimetidine decreases serum conc. of chlordiazepoxide
Absorption impaired by mag, silicate, morphine, pethidine, atropine
Absorpitin enhanced by metoclopromide and alum, hydroxide
Potentiates action of major neuroleptics
Chlordiazepoxide- Alcohol potentiates chlordiazepoxide and concurrent use of both could be dangerous
Amitriptyline- Potentiates sedative action of alcohol
Antiparkinsonian agents and antipsychotic drugs increase risk of anticholinergic effects.
Reduced effects of antihypertnsives Marked hypeplexia, convulsions and coma with MAOI
Potentiates hypertensive effects of sympathomimetics
Adverse Reaction:
Physical and psychological dependence
Withdrawal syndrome Impairs psychomotor performance
More accidental prone
Aggression in predisposed individuals esp. in combination with alcohol
Postural hypotension, tachycardia, conduction disturbances
Dry mouth , weight gain, sour or metallic taste
Stomatitis, constipation,
Blurring of vision,
Urinary retention
Fatigue, weakness, dizziness
Tremors, headache, confusion and delirium in elderly
Weight gain, tardive dyskinesia
Neuloeptic malingnant syndrome, sexual disturbances
Agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia
Cardiac arrhythmias
Contra-Indications:
Hypersensitivity to benzodiazepines or MAO inhibitors
Jaundice, myastenia gravis, acute pulmonary insufficiency and respiratory depression
Depression, prophyria, heart block, cardiac arrhythmias, severe hepatic disease
Pregnancy, lactation
Special Precaution-
Alcohol, sedation, dependence
Elderly and debilitated patients Liver or kidney dysfunction
Bipolar illness Recovery after MI ,
CVS diseases, epilepsy,
Psychoses, abrupt withdrawal , urinary retention
Prostatic hyperplasia, chronic constipation
Angl-closure glucoma, Phaeochromocytoma

Dosage
Adult 30mg daily in divided doses up to 100mg daily in severe conditions
Elderly/ debilitated - dose reduction may be required
Pregnancy and lactation:
Contraindicated for use during pregnancy and lactation.
