Drug Interaction:
Calcium component of polycarbophil calcium may reduce the absorption of tetracyclines from the gastro-intestinal tract. It should be taken 1 or 2 hours after the antibiotic
Indication:
Bulk laxative for adjusting faecal consistency
Adverse Reaction:
Similar to Ispaghula Polycarbiphil release calcium ions in the gastro-intestinal tract and should be avoided by patients who must restrict their calcium intake. Risk of oesophagal obstruction if such bulk laxatives are swallowed dry. Therefore they should always be taken with sufficient fluid and should not be taken before going to bed Should be avoided by patients who have difficulty in swallowing
Dosages/ Overdosage Etc:
Bulk laxative for adjusting faecal consistency
Dose -
1g polycarbophil given by mouth up to 4 times in a day, as necessary Also used topically as vaginal mosituriser and an ocular lubricant
Patient Information:
Should always be taken to take sufficient fluid and should not be taken before going to bed Should be avoided by patients who have difficulty in swallowing
