+ Oxytocic drugs
Symapathomimetics incr pressor effect of the sympathomimetics increased possibly resulting in postpatum hypertension
Sympathomimetics -
If used concurrently with oxytocic drugs, the pressor effect of the sympathomimetics mmay be increased possibly resulting in postpatum hypertension Severe hypertension occurred when oxytocin was given 3 o 4 hours following prophylactic admin. of a vasoconstrictor in conjunction with caudal block anesthesia Used comcomittantly with prostaglandins risk of uterine rupture and cervical lacerations. Useful combinations with ergometrine in control of postpartum haemorrhage.
Indication:
Antepartum, Postpartum uterine contraction.
Oxytocic drugs

Adverse Reaction:
Maternal water intoxification, tetanic uterine contractions causing fetal hypoxia and death, rupture of gravid uterus.
Neonatal jaundice Hypotension and tachycardia. Contractions are more difficult to tolerate.
Contra-Indications:
Cephalopelvic disproportion, abnormal presentation, excessive uterine distension,parity greater than 4, elderly multiparae, previous cesarian section or other uterine surgery, severe toxaemia, hypertonic contractions. Predisposition to amniotic embolism.
Special precautions:
Use only in hospital conditions when i.v.infusion is given. Cardiovascular disorders.
Dosages/ Overdosage Etc:
Indications:
Antepartum, Postpartum uterine contraction.
Dosage:
IV infusion -drip method. Initial dose shpould not be 1 to 2mu/min.
Gradually increase the dose in increments of no more than 1 to 2mu/min at 15 to 20 minutes intervals..

Patient Information:

5. Missed dose -
If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. however, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double doses.
6. Storage -
Keep out of reach of children. Store away from heat or direct sunlight. Do not store
the capsule in bathroom, near the kitchen sink, or in other damp places.
7. Outdated medicines -
Do not keep outdated medicine or medicine no longer needed. Be sure that any
discarded medicine is out of reach of children.
Pharmacology/ Pharmacokinetics:
Pharmacology:
Oxytocin, an endogenous hormone produced in the posterior pituitary gland, has uterine stimulant properties, especially on the gravid uterus, as well as vasopressive and antidiuretic effects.
Pharmacokinetics:
The plasma of half-life of synthetic oxytocin is 1 to 6 minutes, but this decreases in late pregnancy and lactation.

Pregnancy:
No known indications for use in first trimester exist other than in spontaneous or induced abortion.
Lactation:
Oxytocin may be found in small quantites in breast milk. If a postpatum dosage is required to control uterine bleeding, nursing should not commence until the day after oxytocin has been discontinued
Children:
Not intended for use in children.
