Amphotericin B

flucytosine toxicity increased by increasing its cellular uptake or

impair or impair renal excretion

Cysosine

inactivate the anifungal activity of flucytosine

Indication:

Serious infections caused by strains of canidida or Cryptococcus

Adverse Reaction:

Respiratory arrest, chest pain, dyspnea. Rash,pruritus, urticaria, Photosensitivity. Nausea, emesis,

Abdominal pain, Diarrhea, anorexia, Dry mouth, duodenal ulcer, Haemorhage, hepatic dysfunction, Jaundice, ulcerative colitis, Bilirubin elevation.

Contra-Indications:

Hypersens to the drug

Dosages/ Overdosage Etc:

Indications:

Serious infections caused by strains of canidida or Cryptococcus

Dosage:

Usual dosage- 50 to 150mg/kg/day in divided doses at 6 hourly intervals. To reduce or avoid nausea or vomiting, take capsules a few at a time over 15 minutes.

1.Allergies-

Tell your doctor if you ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to

flucytosine. Also tell your healthcare care professional if you are allergic to

any other substances such as foods. preservatives or dyes.

2.Pregnancy-

Flucytosine has not been reported to cause cause birth defects or other

problems in humans. However studies in rats have shown that flucytosine

causes birth defects.

3. Breast-feeding-

Flucytoisine has not been reported to cause problems in nursing babies

4.Children-

This medicine is not expected to cause birth defects or other problems

in humans.

5.Older adults-

This medicine is not expected to cause different side effects or problems

in children than it does in adults.

6. Other medicines-

When you taking flucytosine it is especially important that doctor knows if you

are taking any of the following-

Amphotericin B or

Antithyroid agents or

Azothiaropine or

Chloramphenicol or

Ganceclovir or

Mercaptopurine or

Methotrexate or

Pilcamycin or

X-ray treatment - use of flucytosine with any of these medicines may increase

the chance of side effects of the blood

7. Other medical problems-

The presence of other medical problems may affect the use of flycytosine..

Make sure you tell your doctor if you have any other medical problems

especially-

Blood disease - flucytosine may cause blood problems

Kidney disease - patients with kidney disease may have increased

side effects

Liver disease- flucytosine may cause liver side effects

Pharmacology/ Pharmacokinetics:

Pharmacology:

Flucytosine has in vitro and vivo activity against Canidida and Crytococcus, but the exact mode is not known

Pharmacokinetics:

Well absorbed after oral use with peak serum levels in 2 hrs. About 80 to 90% of the drug is excreted unchanged in the urine

Pregnancy and lactation:

Pregnancy:

No adequate or well controlled studies studies on pregnant woman. Use only if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk

Lactation:

Because of the potential serious adverse reaction to the nursing infant, either discontinue nursing or discontinue the drug.
