Pharmacology/ Pharmacokinetics:
Pharmacology:
The human body secretes the hormone insulin. The primary function of insulin is to convert glucose into glycogen. Chromium is considered an essential trace nutrient. Cr binding protein a naturally occuring oligopeptide, low molecular weight chromium binding substance(LMWCr) has been found to activate insulin receptor kinase activity up to 7 fold. This activation may lead to increased insulin sensitivity
Pharmacokinetics:
After oral administration of chromium picolinate supplement at 40mcg Cr/day for 3 days to male and female volunteers, the mean percentage of Cr absorbed was 2.8% with a range of 1.5 -5.2%. Half of the dose is retained in the liver. It is slowly excreted from cells and tissues and therefore, increased absorption of Cr may lead to accumulation of chromium.
