Drug Interaction:
Additive effect with sodium retension caused by hydrocorticosteroids. Potentiates renal excretion of tetracyclines. Hypochloraemic alkalosis may occur if used in conjunction with potassium depleting diuretics.
May increase half-life of basic drugs like quinidine, amphetamines, ephedrine and pseudoephedrine. Reduce nephrotoxicity caused by methotrexate. Enhances elimination of salicylates and barbiturates.
Indication:
Metabolic acidosis
Adverse Reaction:
Over dose or too rapid administration can cause metabolic alkalosis (especially in renal impairment).
Stomach cramps and flatulance. False positive sticks for proteins.
Contra-Indications:
Where sodium salt is contraindicated like hypertension,and oedema, hyperosmolar states.
Special precautions:
Hypoventilatory states, hypocalcaemia, alkalosis, renal disease, neonates.
