INFORMATION- UPDATE-
INTRANASAL CALCITONIN BANNED IN EUROPE, CANADA
The European Medicines Agency Committee for Medical Products for Human Use has
recommended ban on the use of Intranasal calcitonin containing products for the treatment
of osteoporosis.
Even for dosage forms ( injection and infusion ) for other indications such
as Pagets disease , hypercalcemia, and prevention of acute bone loss due to sudden
imobilasation , the drug should be used for short duration since long term use is established
with increased risk of cancer.
Canada has also banned the product
(MIMS)
Adverse Reaction:
Rhinitis, other nasal/respiratory symptoms. local irritations, flushing, dizziness,
GI upset, Musculo-skeletal pain, headache,
Taste disturbances, Throat irritations, Sinusitis Epistaxis,
Hypersensitivity
Anaphylaxis and anaphylactic shock
Tremor , abdominal pain
Patient Information:
Calcitonin- systemic
1.Allergies-
Tell your doctor if you are have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to
calcitonin or other proteins. Also tell your healthcare care professional if you
are allergic to any other substances such as foods. preservatives or dyes.
2.Diet-
Make certain your doctor knows if your diet includes large amounts of
calcium containing foods and/or vitamin D containing foods such as
milk or other dairy products. Calcium and Vitamin D may cause the
calcitonin to be less effective in treating a high blood calcium.
Also let your doctor know if you are any special diet, such as low-sodium
or low sugar diet.
3.Pregnancy-
Calcitonin has not been studied in pregnant women. However, in animal
studies , calcitonin has been shown to lower the birth weight of the baby
when the mother was given a dose of calcitonin many times the human
dose.
4. Breast-feeding-
Calcitonin has not been reported to cause problems in nursing babies.
However, studies in animals have shown that calcitonin may decrease
the flow of breast milk
5.Children-
Studies of thie medicine has been done only in adult patients and there is no specific
information comparing the use of calcitonin in children with use in other age groups.
Therfore be sure to discuss with your doctor the use of this medicine in children
6.Older adults-
Many medicines have not been studied specifically in older people. Therefore,
it may not be known whether they work exactly the same way than they do in
younger adults, or if they cause different side effects or problems in older people.
Although there is no specific information comparing use of calcitonin in the elderly
with use in other age groups, this medicine is not expected to cause different
side effects or problems in older people than it does inyounger adults.
Calcitoni is often used in elderly patients
7. Other medicines-
Although certain medicines should not be used together at all, in other cases two
different medicines may be used together even if an interaction might occur.
In such cases your doctor may want to change the dose, or other precautions
may be necessary.
Tell your doctor if you are using any other prescription or non-prescription
(Over-the counter) OTC medicine.
