Drug Interaction:
Analbolic steroids include-
Oxymetholone, Stanazolol, Oxandrolone, Nandrolone phenpropionate, Nandrolone deconate,
Refer - Nandrolone
Interacting drugs- summary
Anabolic steroids +
Anticoagulants- anticoagulant effect potentiated by 17-alkyl testosterone derivatives ( eg. anabolic steroids ) Avoid this combination.
Sulfonylureas- hypoglycemic action enhanced by methadrostenone Monitor blood glucose and observe patients for signs of hypoglycemia
Drug/Lab interactions-
Glucose tests- Anabolic steroids have altered glucose tolerance tests. Monitor diabetis closely and adjust insulin or oral hypoglycemic dosage accordingly Thyroid function tests - Decrease in protein bound iodine PBI . throxine -binding capacity, radioactive iodine uptake and increase in T 3 uptake by resin, free throxine levels, remain normal.
Indication:
Control of metastatic cancer in women.
Analbolic steroids include- Oxymetholone, Stanazolol, Oxandrolone, Nandrolone phenpropionate, Nandrolone deconate,
Refer - Nandrolone
Adverse Reaction:
Endocrine- Virilization is the most common undesirable effect.
Acne occurs especially in women and prepubertal males.
Anabolioc steroids inhibit gonodotropin secretion
Prebertal males- first signs of virilization are phallic enlargement and increase in frequency of erections
Postpubertal males- acne, inhibition of testicular function with oligospermia, gynecomastia, testicular atrophy, chronic priapism, epididymitis, bladder irritability , change in libido, impotence
Females- hirsutism, acne, hoarseness or deepening of voice, clioral enlargement, change in libido, menstrual irregularities, male-pattern baldness,
Voice changes, hirsutism and clotoral enlargement are usually not reversible even after
prompt discontinuation.
Electrolyte disturbances - retention of sodium, chloride , water potassium, phophates, and calcium, ankle swelling, decreased glucose tolerance
GI - nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, cholestatic jaundice, hepatic necrosis, death, hepatocellular neoplasms and peliosis hepatitis ( long term therapy )
CNS- excitation, insomnia, habituation, depression
Lab test abnormalites-
Liver function tests- BSP retention, increased AST, serum bilirubin, and alkaline phosphates
Blood coagulation tests- may suppresslotting factors, II, V, and X and increase in
prothrombin time.
Miscellaneous- increased creatinine and creatinine excretion, incfreased serum
cholesterol
Contra-Indications:
Hypersentivity to anabolic steroids,
Male patients with prostrate or breast carcinoma, carcinoma of breast in females with hypercalcemia,
nephrosis, pregnancy,
To enhance physical appearance or athelite performance
Warnings-
Athelete peformance is modified by these agents
Seriuos health hazards associated with anabolic steroids minimize any real real or perceived gain
in performance. Adverse effects may be serious and irreversible
Elderly- geriatric patients treated with anabolic steroids may be at an increased risk of development
of prostatic hypertrophy and prostatic carcinoma
Pregnancy- contraindicated because of possible fetal masculinazation
Lactation- Because of potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants, decide whether to
continue nursing or discontinue the drug
Children- safety and efficacy in children have not been established
Special precaution:
Virilization in femsale may occur. If amenorrhea or menstrual irregularites develop during treatment,
discontinue the drug.
Leukemia observed in patients with aplastic anemia treated with oxymetholone, but role of
oxymetholone not clear
Edema - with or without congestive heart failue may occur, Concomittant admin, with with an adrenal
steroid or ACTH may increase edema. Use with caution in patientsith cardiac or renal dieesase
Hypercalcemia - may develop both spontaneously and as a rsult of hormonal therapy in women
diseminated breast carcinoma. Perform frequent urie and serum calcium level examin.
Diabetes- Monitor carefully. Tolerance to glucose may be altered.
Seizure disorder- patients may note an increase in seizure frequency
