INFORMATION -UPDATE
ORCIPRENALINE - BANNED IN BRITAIN
The medicine and Healthcare Regulatory Agency (MHRA ) of the Uinited Kingdom has ordered the withdrawal of orciprenaline (sold as ALUPENT) indicated in the treatment of bronchospasm, from the British market following the review of risk -benefit equation. Reasons given include-
The drug is significantly less efficacious than salbutamol or terbutaline
It has significantly higher incidence of cardiac side effects
Cardiac adverse reactions occur before optimal bronchospasm is acheived.

Adverse Reaction:
Ventricular arrhythmias,cardiac arrest. tachycardia, nervousness,
tremor, nausea, hypertensions, palpitations, paradoxical bronchospasm,
depression,headache, sleep disturbances,extrasystole and allergic skin reactions.
Inhalation: Irritation, cough, swallowing of inhalation may cause abdominal pain,overdosage.
Contra-Indications:
Cardiac arrhthymias, IHD, MI, thyrotoxicosis, hypersens. Special precautions: Liver/kidney disease, diabetes, neonates, children below 12 years, elderly. Pregnancy lactation
