Adverse Reaction:
Anaphylactic reactions.
Pain at inj site. Hypersensitivity.
GI disturbances, candidiasis,
Eosinophyllia, nitropenia, thrombocytopenia,
Rise in liver enzymes and blood urea.
Positive Coombs test.
Contra-Indications:
Known hypersens to cephalosporins.
Special precautions:
Hypersens to penicillins. Overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms. Pseudomembranous colotis.
Early pregnancy.
Lactation
Use glucose oxidase or hexokinase methods for blood or plasma glucose tests,
renal failure.
Dosages/ Overdosage Etc:
A first generation drug
Indications:
Respiratory tract infections,otitis media, skin and structure infections, GU infections.
Dosage:
Adults: 1 to 4g/day in divided doses. Usual dose 250mg every 6hours. May need larger doses for more severe infections. If dose is more than 4g/day, use parentral drugs.
Children: 25 to 50mg/kg/day in divided doses. For streptococcal pharyngitis in patients less than 1year for skin structure infection divide total daily dose and give every 12 hours. In very severe infections, double the dose- 75 to 100mg/kg/day in 4 divided doses.
