Patient Information:
Chlolrambucil- Systemic
1. Inform patients that the major toxicites of chlorambucil are related to hypersensitivity ,
drug fever, myleosuppression, hepatotoxicity, infertility, seizures, GI toxicity
and secondary malignancies.
2. Notify physician of unusual bleeding or bruising, fever, nausea, vomiting, skin rash,
chills, sore throat, cough, shortness of breath, seizures, amenorrhoea, unusual
lumps of masses, flank or stomach pain, joint pain, sores in the mouth or on lips
or yellowish discoluration of the skins or eyes.
3.Allergies-
Tell your doctor if you are have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to
chlorambucil . Also tell your healthcare care professional if you are allergic
to any other substances such as foods. preservatives or dyes.
4.Pregnancy-
This medicine may cause birth defects if either the male or female is taking
it at the time of conception or if taken during pregnancy. In addition, many
cancer patients may cause sterility which could be permanent. sterilty has
been reported with this medicine and the possibilty should be kept in mind
5. Breast-feeding-
Because chlorambucil may cause serious side effects, breast-feeding is
not generally recommended while you are taking it
6.Children-
In general this medicine has not been shown to cause differnt side effects or
problems than it does in adults. However, some children with nephrotic
syndrome ( a kidney disease) may be more likely to have convulsions
(seizures)
7.Older adults-
Many medicines have not been studied specifically in older people.
Therefore, it may not be known whether they work exactly the same way
they do in younger adults, or if they cause different side effects or problems
in older people. There is no specific information comparing use of
chlorambucil in the elderly with use in other age groups
8. Other medicines-
Although certain medicines should not be used together at all, in other cases
two different medicines may be used together even if an interaction might occur.
In such cases your doctor may want to change the dose, or other precautions
may be necessary.
When you are taking chlorambucil it is especially important that your doctor
know if you are taking any of the following-
Amphotericin B or
Antithyroid drugs (medicine for overactive thyroid) or
Chloramphenicol or
Colchicine or
Flucytosine or
Gangiclovir or
Interferon or
Pilcamycin or
Zidovudine or
If you ever been treated with radiation or cancer medicines - chlorambucil
may increase the effects of these medicines or radiation therapy on the blood
Azathioprine or
Corticosteroids or
Cyclophosphamide or
Cyclosporine or
Cytarbine or
Metacapropurine or
Mercaptopurine or
Muromonab CD3 or
Tacrolimus -there may be an increased risk of infection and development
of cancer because chlorambucil decreases the bodys ability to fight them
Probenecid or
Sulfinpyrazone - chlorambucil may increase the amount of uric acid in the blood.
Since these medicines are used to lower uric acid levels, they may not work
as well in patients taking chlorambucil
9. Other medical problems-
The presence of other medical problems may affect the use of chlorambucil
Make sure you tell your doctor if you have any other medical problems
especially-
Chickenpox( including recent exposure)
Herpes zoster (shingles) risk of severe disease affecting other parts of the body
Convulsion(seizures- history of) or
Head injury- increased risk of seizures
Gout or
Kidney stones (history of ) chlorambucil may increase the level of uric acid
in the body which can cause gout or kidney stones
Infection- chlorambucil decreases your bodys ability to fight infection
