Iodine +

Lithium synergistic action to produce hypothyroidism

Alkalis and Proteins Disinfectant property lost in presence of alkalis and proteins.

Indication:

Anti-microbial agent

Adverse Reaction:

Severe neutropenia only when applied in large areas.

Long term sytemic adminstration- pulmonary oedema. Hypersensitivity with systemic and topical use include, urtcaria, angiooedema, cutaneous haemorrhage, purpura, fever,arthalgia, lymphodenopathy and eosinophillia, hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism(iod Basedow phenomenon)

Prolonged admin: Iodism(metallic taste, increased salivation, coryza,swelling and inflammation of throat, swollen and irritated eyes, pulmonary oedema, GI uosets and diarrhoea). Interferes with thyroid function tests.

Topical use: skin irritation. I-131 & I-125: Hypothyroidism, hypoparathyroidism, radiation, throiditis,rarely leukaemia and Ca thyroid.

Contra-Indications:

Hypersensitivity,pregnancy,lactation.

Special precautions:

Not for use in conjuntival sac,but may be used in skin around the eye.In case of accidental exposure, flush with water. Nodular goitre.

IODINATED GLYCEROL

1.Allergies-

Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to

iodinated glycerol. Also tell your healthcare care professional if you are allergic

to any other substances such as foods. preservatives or dyes.

2.Pregnancy-

Iodinated glycerol is not recommended for use during pregnancy

3. Breast-feeding-

Iodinated glycerol is not recommended for use in nursing mothers because of

it may cause enlargement of thyroid glands in the fetus resulting in breathing

problems

4.Children-

Swelling of the neck (goiter or enlarged thyroid with cystic fibrosis . These patients

are usually more sensitive to the effects of iodinated glycerol.

5.Older adults-

Although there is no specific information comparing use of iodinated glycerol

in the elderly with use in other age groups this medicine is not expected to

cause different side effects in older people than it does in adults

6. Other medicines-

Tell your doctor if you are using any of the following -

Antithyroid agents or

Lithium - taking these medicines with iodinated glycerol may increase the

chance of goiter or an underactive thyroid

7. Other medical problems-

The presence of other medical problems may affect the use of iodinated

glycerol. Make sure you tell your doctor if you have any other medical problems

especially-

Ance -iodinated glycerol may make the condition worse

Cystic fibrosis -iodinated glycerol may increase the chance of goiter in these

patients

Thyroid disease- iodinated glycerol may increase the chance of goiter in patients

with overactive thyroid, also prolonged use of iodinated glycerol may result in

underactive thyroid

IODINE

1.Allergies-

Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to

Iodine. Also tell your healthcare care professional if you are allergic to any other

substances such as foods. preservatives or dyes.

2.Pregnancy-

Use of topical iodine is not recommended during pregnancy because it has been

shown to cause thyroid problems in the new born.

3. Breast-feeding-

Topical medicine passes into breast milk and is shown to cause unwanted effects..

It may be necesary to use another medicine or stop breast feeding. consult your

doctor.

4.Children-

Use of topical iodine is not recommended for newborn infants because it may cause

skin or and thyroid problems.

5.Older adults-

Although there is no specific information comparing use of topical iodine in the

elderly with use in other age groups, this medicine is not expected to cause different

side effects or problems in elderly than in younger adults.

6. Other medicines-

Tell your doctor if you are using any other prescription or non-prescription

(Over-the counter) OTC medicine that is to be applied to the same area of the skin.

7. Other medical problems-

The presence of other medical problems may affect the use of topical medicine.

Make sure you tell your doctor if you have any other medical problems

especially-

Animal bites or

Deep wounds or Serious burns - the chance of side effects may be increased
