Patient Information:
Benzonate- Systemic
1.Do not chew or break capsules, swallow whole.
2.Allergies-
Tell your doctor if you are have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to
benzonate or to tetracaine or other local anesthetics. Also tell your healthcare
care professional if you are allergic to any other substances such as foods,
preservatives or dyes.
3.Pregnancy-
Studies have not been done in humans or animals.
4. Breast-feeding-
It is known whether benzonate passes into breast milk. Although most medicines pass
into breast milk in small amounts,many of them may be used safely while breast-feeding.
Mothers who are taking this medicine and who wish to breast feed should discuss this
with their doctor.
5.Children-
Children may tend to chew the capsules before swallowing it. This may cause
numbness( loss of feeling) in the mouth and throat, and choking may occur.
6.Older adults-
Many medicines have not been studied specifically in older people. Therefore, it may not be known whether they work exactly the same way than they do in younger adults, or if they cause different side effects or problems in older people.
There is no specific information comparing use of benzonate in the elderly with use in other age groups
7. Other medicines-
Although certain medicines should not be used together at all, in other cases two
different medicines may be used together even if an interaction might occur. In such
cases your doctor may want to change the dose, or other precautions may be necessary.
Tell your doctor if you are using any other topical prescription of prescription or
non-prescription (Over-the counter) OTC medicine.
8. Other medical problems-
The presence of other medical problems may affect the use of benzonate.
Make sure you tell your doctor if you have any other medical problems especially-
Mucus or phelgm with cough- since benzonate decreases coughing it make it
difficult to get rid of the mucus that may collect in the lungs and airways with
some diseases
