Dextrothyroxine - Systemic
1.Notify physicain of chest pain, palpitations, sweating, diarrhea, headache,
or skin rash.
2.Allergies-
Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to
dextrotyroxine. Also tell your healthcare care professional if you are allergic
to any other substances such as foods. preservatives or dyes.
3.Diet-
Before prescribing medicine for your condition, your doctor will probably
try to control your condition by prescribing a special diet to you. Such a diet
may be low in fats,sugars,and/or cholesterol. Many people are able to
control their condition by carefully following their doctors orders for proper
diet and excercise.
Medicine is prescribed only when additional help is needed and is effective
only when a schedule of diet and excercise is followed.
Also this medicine is less effective if you are greatly overweight. It is important
for you to go on a reducing diet. However, check with your doctor before going
on a diet.
Make sure your doctor knows if you are on any special diet , such as low sodium
or low sugar diet.
3.Pregnancy-
Dextrothyroxine has not been studied in pregnant women. However,studies
in animals have not shown that dextrothyroxine causes birth defects or other
problems. Before taking this medicine make sure that your doctor knows
if you pregnant or if you become pregnant.
4. Breast-feeding-
It is not known whether dextrothyroxine passes into breast milk. Although most
medicines pass into breast milk in small amounts,many of them may be used
safely while breast-feeding. Mothers who are taking this medicine and who wish
to breast feed should discuss this with their doctor.
5.Children-
There is no specific information comparing use of dextrothyroxine in children
with use in other age groups. However, use is not recommended in children
under 2 years of age since cholesterol is needed for normal development.
6.Older adults-
Side effects are more likely to occur in the elderly, who are usually more
sensitive to the effects of dextrothyroxine
7. Other medicines-
Although certain medicines should not be used together at all, in other cases two
different medicines may be used together even if an interaction might occur.
In such cases your doctor may want to change the dose, or other precautions
may be necessary.
When you are taking dextrothyroxine it is especially important that your
doctor know if you are taking any of the following
Antocoaglants- the effects of anticoagulant may be altered , a change of
dosage of the anticoagulant may be necessary
Cholestyramine or
Colestipol - the effects of dextrothyromine may decrease , these two medicines
should be taken atleast 4 to 5 hours before or after dextrothyroxine
8. Other medical problems-
The presence of other medical problems may affect the use of dextrothyroxine.
Make sure you tell your doctor if you have any other medical problems
especially-
Diabetes- blood sugar levels may be increased
Heart or blood vessel disease or
Overactive thyroid - dextrothyroxine may these conditions worse
Kidney disease- higher blood vessels of dextrothyroxine may result
in increase the chance of side effects
Liver disease- may lead to an increase in cholesterol blood levels
Underactive thyroid- there may an increased sensitivity to the effects
of dextrothyroxine
