Pharmacology/ Pharmacokinetics:
Pharmacokinetics-
Sodium Feredetate is in unionized form . It breaks down within the gastrointestinal tract to release elemental iron which is then absorbed. Folic acid rapidly absorbed orally and converted to tetrahydrofolate, the metabolically active form.
About 70-80% of a 2mg oral dose of folic acid is absorbed readily from the gastrointetinal tract. It is well distributed into plasma ( 70%) and extracellular fluid. Excess folic acid is excreted largely in urine in unchanged form. Vitamin B12 is taken orally.
Absotption is dose dependent and at high dose it ispoorly absorbed. Vitamin B12 attaches to transcobalamin II for transport to bone marrow and to the liver for storage. Plasma half- life and protein binding varies with dose.
