Indication:
Vulvovaginitis caused by candida albicans
Adverse Reaction:
Local sensitivity such as increased discomfort or a buring sensation have occassionally been
reported
Treatment should be discontinued if either local or systemic manifestations of sulfonamide
toxicity occur
Contra-Indications:
Not to be used to patients with known sensitivity to sulfonamides
Special Precautions-
Deaths associated with administration of oral sulfonamides have reportedly occurred from
hypersensitivity reactions, agranulocytosis, aplastic anemia and other blood dyscrasis
Vaginal applicator or insertors should be used with caution after the seventh month of pregnancy
Drug abuse and dependence- tolerance , abuse or dependence with sulfinilamide has not
been reported
Pregnancy- should be given only if needed
Lactation- because of the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants from
sulfonamides, a decison should be taken whether to discontinue nursing or the drug depending
on the importance of the drug to the mother
Children- safety and efficacy of sulfonamides in pediatric patients have not been established
Monitoring- because sulfonamides are absorbed from the vaginal mucosa the usual precautions
for oral sulfonamides apply.
Patients be observed for skin rash or evidence of systemic toxicity and these develop the
medications should be discontinued
Dosages/ Overdosage Etc:
Indication-
Vulvovaginitis caused by candida albicans
Dosage-
One applicatorful ( about 6g ) or 1 suppository intravaginally once ot twice daily.
Improvements in symptoms should occur within a few days,but treatment should be coninued
for a period of 30 days.
Douching with a suitable solution before insertion may be recommended for hygenic purposes
Patient Information:
1. The doctor should advice the patient that in the event of unsual itching and burning occur, or
other unusual symptoms develop medication should be discontinued and not restarted
without further consultation.
Pregnancy and lactation:
Pregnancy-
Should be given only if needed.
