Indication-
Hyperliperdemia
Dosage-
Maximum dose - 6 packets of full scoops ( anhydrous cholestyramine resin 24g ) per day
Adults- 4g 9 1 packet or 1 full scoop daily . individualize dosage
Maintenance dosage- 2 to 4 packets or full scoops 1 to 2 times daily.( anhydrous cholestyramine
resin 8 to 16g 0 divided into 2 doses . Increase dose gradually
Dosage adjustments- In patients with preexisting constipation the starting dose should be 1 packet
or 1 scoop once daily for 5 to 7 days increasing to twice daily with monitoring of constipation
and serum lipotroteins at least 4 to 6 weeks apart.

Cholestyramine - Oral
1.Allergies-
Tell your doctor if you are have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to
cholestryramine. Also tell your healthcare care professional if you are allergic to
any other substances such as foods. preservatives or dyes.
2.Pregnancy-
Cholestyramine is not absorbed into the body and is not likely to cause problems.
However, it may reduce absorbtion into the body. Ask your doctor whether you need
to take ectra vitamins.
3. Breast-feeding-
Cholestyramine is not absorbed into the body and is not likely to cause problems.
However, the reduced absorption of vitamins by the mother may affect the nursing
infant.
4.Children-
This medicine has been tested in a limited number of children. In
effective doses the medicine has not been shown to cause different side effects or
problems than it does in adults.
5.Older adults-
Side efffects may be more likely to occur in patients over 60 years of age who
are usually more sensitive to the effects of cholestyramine
6. Other medicines-
Although certain medicines should not be used together at all, in other cases two
different medicines may be used together even if an interaction might occur.
In such cases your doctor may want to change the dose, or other precautions
may be necessary.
When you are taking cholestyramine it is especially important your doctor
know if you are using any of the following-
Anticoagulants- the effects of anticoagulant may be changed and this may
increase the chance of bleeding
Digitalis glycosides (heart medicine) or
Diuretics or
Penicillin G taken by mouth or
Phenylbutazone or
Propranol or
Tetracycline taken by mouth - or
Thyroid hormones or
Vancomycin taken by mouth- cholestyramine may prevent these
medicines from working properly
7. Other medical problems-
The presence of other medical problems may affect the use of cholestyramine.
Make sure you tell your doctor if you have any other medical problems
especially-
Bleeding problems- or
Constipation or
Gallstones or
Heart or blood veseals or
Haemorrhoids or
Stomach ulcer or other stomach problems or
Underactive thyroid - cholestyramine may make the conditions worse
Kidney disease- there is an increased risk of developing electrolyte
problems( problems in the blood)
Phenylketonuria - phenylalanine in aspartamine is included in the
sugar-free brand of cholestryramine and should be avoided.
Aspartame can cause problems in people with phenylketonuria.
Therefore, it is best if you avoid using sugar-free product.
