Pharmacology/ Pharmacokinetics
Drug Interaction:
Failure of contraception (diaphragm) with vaginal pessaries/cream. Reduced efficacy with oral administration with food/drinks.
Indication:
Oral candidasis
Adverse Reaction:
Diarrhoea, GI distress, nausea and vomiting. Vaginal pessaries/cream contraceptives diaphragm should not be used concomittantly or rubber may be damaged. Prolonged use-irritation Topical application- irritation Oral suspension/drops- reduced efficacy if food/drink taken within 1 hour of administration.
Contra-Indications:
Hypersens.

Dosage:
Oral adults and children - 500,000 to 1,000,000 units 3 times daily (1/2 dose in each side of the mouth, retaining the drug as long as possible). Do not swallow.

NYSTATIN - Topical
1.Allergies-
Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to
Nystatin. Also tell your healthcare care professional if you are allergic to any other
substances such as foods. preservatives or dyes.
2.Pregnancy-
Nystatin topical preparation have not shown to cause birth defects or
other problems in animals.
3. Breast-feeding-
It is known whether Nystatin passes into breast milk. Mothers who
are taking this medicine and who wish to breast feed should discuss this
with their doctor.
4.Children-
Although there is no specific information comparing use of nystatin
in children with use in other age groups, this medicine is not expected
to cause different side effects or problems than it does in adults.
5.Older adults-
There is no specific information comparing use of topical nystatin
in the elderly with use in other age groups
6. Other medicines-
Tell your doctor if you are using any other prescription or
non-prescription (Over-the counter) OTC medicine.
Pharmacology/ Pharmacokinetics:
Pharmacology:
A polyene antibiotic with antifungal activity. Nystatin probably acts by binding to sterols in cell membrane of the fungus, with a resultant change in membrane permeability allowing leakage of intracelluar components.
Pharmacokinetics:
Sparing absorbed after oral use, with no detectable blood levels at recommended doses. Most unabsorbed drug is passed unchanged in stool.
Interaction with Food:
Oral suspension/drops- reduced efficacy if food/drink taken within 1 hour of administration.
Pregnancy and lactation:

No adverse effects or complications have been attibuted to nystatin in infants born to women treated with nystatin
