Potentiates nephrotoxicity of aminoglycosides.

A First generation drug
Adverse Reaction:
Anaphylactic reactions.
Nausea,vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal discomfort.
Allergic reactions such as skin rash, urticaria, eosinophilla, angioedema. Rise in liver enzyme values.
Superinfection with resistent organisms(esp candida) Possibility of pseudomembranous colitis.
False urinary reaction of urinary glucose, development of positive coombs test.
Interferes with cross matching of blood.
False positive precipitation test with proteins.
Contra-Indications:
Known allergy to cephalosporins.
Special precautions:
If hypersen reactions occur, discontinue drug & treat suitably.
Prolonged use may cause over-growth of non-suseptible organisms.
If superinfection occurs take appropiate measures.
Caution in patients with history of GI disease especially colitis.
Dosages/ Overdosage Etc:
A first generaration drug.
Indications:
Urinary tract infection, skin & skin structure infections, pharyngitis, tonsilitis.
Food interaction: Can be given without regards to meals.
Dosage:
1 or 2g/day in single or divided doses.
Children: 30mg/kg/day in divided doses every 12 hours..
