Drug Interaction:
Alkylating Agents Includes-
Mechlorethamine ,Chlorambucil, Melphalan, Ifosamide,Cyclophosphamide, Urasil Mustard, Lomustine, Carmustine, Streptozocin, Thiotepa, Busulfan, Pipobroman, Cisplatin, Carboplatin
Immunisation with live viruses can cause threatening infection.
Combination with theoguanine results in nodular regenerative hyperplasia, portal hypertension, varices.
Cyclophosmamide enhances haemopoetic recovery.
Patient Information:
Busulfan - Systemic
1.Allergies-
Tell your doctor if you are have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to
busulfan
2.Pregnancy-
Although one case has been reported, there is a chance that this medicine may
cause birth defects if either the male or the female is taking it at the time of
conception or if it is taken during pregnancy, In addition cancer medicines
may cause sterilty which could be permanent.Sterility may occur with busufan
and this possibility should be kept in mind.
It is best you discussed this with you doctor before taking this medicine. it is
best to use some kind of birth control while youn are taking busulfan. Tell your
doctor right away if you are pregnant while taking busulfan
3. Breast-feeding-
It is known whether busulfan passes into breast milk. However, because this
medicine may cause serious side effects, breast-feeding is generally not
recommended, while you are taking it.
4.Children-
Although there is no specific information comparing use of busufan in children
with use in other groups, this medicine is not expected to cause different side
effects or problems in children than it does in adults
5.Older adults-
Many medicines have not been studied specifically in older people. Therefore,
it may not be known whether they work exactly the same way than they do in
younger adults, or if they cause different side effects or problems in older people.
There is no specific information comparing use of busulfan in the elderly with use
in other age groups, this medicine is not expected to different side effects or
problems in elder people than it does in younger adults.
6. Other medicines-
Although certain medicines should not be used together at all, in other cases two
different medicines may be used together even if an interaction might occur.
In such cases your doctor may want to change the dose, or other precautions
may be necessary.
When you are taking busulfan it is especially important that your health care
professional know if you taking any of the following-
Amphotericin B by injection(eg Fungizone) or
Antithyroid agents (medicine for overactive thyroid) or
Azathioprine (eg,Imuran)
Chloramphenicol ( eg. Chloromycetin)
Colchicine or
Flucytosine (eg. Ancoban ) or
Ganciclovir (eg.Cytovene)
Interferon( eg. Inron A)
Plicamycin(eg.Mithracin ) or
Zidovudine (eg,AZT, Retrovir) or
If you have ever been treated with radiation or cancer medicines- Busufan may
increase the effect of these medicines or radiation therapy on the blood
Probenecid (eg.Benemid) or
Sulfinpyrazone (eg. Anturane ) Busulfran may raise the amount of uric acid in
the blood. Since these medicines are used to lower uric acid levels, they may
not effective in patients taking busulfan
7. Other medical problems-
The presence of other medical problems may affect the use of busulfan.
Make sure you tell your doctor if you have any other medical problems
especially-
Chicken pox ( including recent exposure ) or
Herpes zoster ( shngles) - risk of severe disease affecting other parts of
the body
Gout ( history of ) or
Kidney stones( or history of ) - busulfan may increase levels of uric acid
in the body, which can cause gout or kidney stones
Head injury or
Convulsions (history of ) - very high doses of busulfan can cause convulsions
Infection- busulfan may decrease your bodys ability to fight infection
