Contra-Indications:
Hypersensitivity to the drug
Warnings-
Bone marrow suppression- including neutropenia, anemia, and thrombocytopenia
Nephrotoxicity /neurotoxicity - Mild neurotoxicites specially parathesis and dizziness, hav been reported rarely
Deaths- Of 196 HCl ( hairy cell leukemia ) entred in the trials, there were 8 deaths reported following treatment
Pregnancy- Use during pregnancy only if the benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus
Lactation- Decide whether to discontinue nursing or discontinue the drug taking into account the importance of drug to the mother
Children- Safety and efficacy in children not established
Patient Information:
Cladribine - Systemic
1.Allergies-
Tell your doctor if you are have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to
cladribine.
2.Pregnancy-
There is a chance that this medcine may cause birth defects if either the male
or female is taking it at the time of conception or if it is taken during pregnancy.
Cladribine has been shown to cause birth defects in mice, and rabbits.
In addition many cancer medicines may cause sterility which could be
permanent.
Although sterility has not been reported with this medicine fertility problems
do occur in male monkeys and the possibility should be kept in mind
It is best to use some kind of birth control while you are receiving
cladribine. Tell your doctor if you think you may become pregnant while
receiving cladribine
3. Breast-feeding-
It is not known whether cladribine passes into breast milk. However, because
this medicine may cause serious side effects, breast-feeding is generally
not recommened while you are receiving it
4.Children-
There is no specific information comparing use of cladribine - in children with use
in other age groups.
5.Older adults-
Many medicines have not been studied specifically in older people. Therefore,
it may not be known whether they work exactly the same way they do in
younger adults, or if they cause different side effects or problems in older people.
Although,there is no specific information comparing use of cladribine in the
elderly with use in other age groups, it is not expected to cause different side
effects or problems in older people than it does in younger adults.
6. Other medicines-
Although certain medicines should not be used together at all, in other cases two
different medicines may be used together even if an interaction might occur.
In such cases your doctor may want to change the dose, or other precautions
may be necessary.
When you are receiving cladribine it is especially important that your doctor
know if you are taking any of the following-
Amphotericin B by injection or
Antithyroid drugs or
Azathioprine or
Cholramphenicol or
Colchicine or
Flucytosine or
Gangiciclovir or
Interferon or
Pilcamycin or
Ziduvudine or
If you have been treated with radiation or cancer medicines- cladribine may
increase the effects of these medicines or radiation therapy on the blood
7. Other medical problems-
The presence of other medical problems may affect the use of cladribine.
Make sure you tell your doctor if you have any other medical problems
especially-
Chickenpox ( including recent exposure ) or
Herpes zoster( shingles) - risk of severe disease affecting other parts of
the body
Gout (history of) or
Kidney stones (history of) - cladribine may increase the levels of uric acid
in the body, which can cause gout or kidney stones
Infection- cladribine may decrease your bodys ability to fight infection
Kidney disease - effects of cladribine may be increased because of
slower removal from the body.
