Drug Interaction:
Absorption increased in presence of fatty food. Reduced plasma levels with enyme reducers eg. phenytoin, carbamazepine, Increased plasma levels with cimetidine
Indication:
Whipworm, pinworm, round, hook worms single or mixed infections.
Adverse Reaction:
Transcient diarrhea, Abdominal pain Nausea, headache Tinnitus, numbness, Fever, dizziness, Myelosuppression ( high doses )
Contra-Indications:
Hypersens to benzimidole derivatives.1st trimester of pregnancy,infants & child < 2years Special precautions: Monitor blood counts & hepatic function esp. in patients receiving high doses Pregnancy and lactation
Dosages/ Overdosage Etc:
Indications:

100mg bid for 3 conscecutive days Alternately 500mg as a single dose. a 2nd course may be given if patient is not cured within 3-4 weeks child- > 1yr 100mg bid for 3 consecutive days alternately, 500mg as a single dose if a patient is not cured within 3-4 weeks

1.Allergies-
Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to
Mebendazole. Also tell your healthcare care professional if you are allergic
to any other substances such as foods. preservatives or dyes.
2.Pregnancy-
Mebendazole is not recommended for use during pregnancy. Although
it has not been shown to cause birth defects or problems in rats , you
must consult your doctor and seek his advice
3. Breast-feeding-
Mothers who are taking this medicine and who wish to breast feed should discuss this
with their doctor.
4.Children-
This medicine has been tested in a limited number of children up to age of 2 or
older, and in effective doses the medicine has not been shown to cause different
side effects or problems than it does in adults.
5.Older adults-
There is no specific information comparing use of mebendazole in the elderly with use
in other age groups
6. Other medicines-
Tell your doctor if you are using any ther prescription or non-prescription
(Over-the counter) OTC medicine.
7. Other medical problems-
Make sure you tell your doctor if you have any other medical problems
especially-
Cohns disease or
Liver disease or
Ulcerative colitis - patients with these medicines may have increased chance
of side effects from mebendazole
Pharmacology/ Pharmacokinetics:
Pharmacology:
Mebendazole inhibits formation of the worms microtubules and irreversibly blocks glucose uptake, therby depleting the endogenous glycogen stored within the parasite.
Pharmacokinetics:
Mebendazole is poorly absorbed. P:eak plasma levels are reached in 2 to 4 hours, folowing administration of 100mg of mebendazole daily for 3 consecutive days.

Use only if needed during the first trimester of pregnancy, only if the benefits outweigh the potential hazards
