Increased risk of pulmonary depression and hypotension with halothane Increased anticoagulant effect. In combination with hydroxyzine reduces nausea,vomiting,enhances analgesia. Respiratory depressant effect enhanced by lidocaine.

Potentiated by alcohol,CNS depressants. May precipitate withdrawal in narcotic addicts. Increased sedative effect with alcohol. Incompatible with soluble barbiturates.

Relief of pain.

Most common- nausea, dizziness, or lightheadedness, vomiting, euphoria

GI - constipation, cramps, abdominal distress, anorexia, diarrhea, dry mouth, taste alteration

CNS- sedation, headache, weakness or faintness, depression, disturbed dreams, insomnia, syncope, hallucinaton, tremor, instabilty, irritability, excitement, tinnitus, disoreientation, confusuin

Ophthalmic- blurred vision, focusing difficulty, nystagmus, diplopia, miosis

Hypersensitivity - edema of thed face, sweating, anaphylactic reaction, rash, urticaria

Dermatologic- soft tissue induration, nodules, cutaneous depression, ulceration, severe sclerosis, of the skin, subcutaneous tissues and rarely , underlyng muscle at the inj site, diaphoresis, stinging om injection, flushed skin, dermatitis, pruritus, toxic epidermal necrolysis

Cardiovascular - hypotension, decrease in blood pressure, tachycardia, circulatory depression, shock, hypertension

Respiratory - respiratory depresion, dyspnea, transcient apnea in newborns whose mothers received parentral penrazocaine during labor.

Hematologic- depression of white blood cells (especially granulocytes) usually reversible , moderate transcient eosinophillia

Miscellaneous - urinary retention, parathesia chills, neuromuscular and psychiatric muscle tremors, alterations in rate or strength of uterine contrations during labour ( parentral form )

Hypersens.Children below 12 years.Head injury or pathological brain conditions.Narcotic dependence. Respiratory depression. Raised intracranial pressure.

Special precautions:

Pulmonary hypertension, Pregnancy,impaired respiratory renal/hepatic function.

Indications: Relief of pain.

Dosage:

Adults - Oral initially 50mg every 3 or 4 hours. Increase it 100mg if necessary

. Children below 12 years - use not recommended.

Pharmacology: Pentazocine is a potent analgesic,weakly antagonises the effects of morphine,mepiridine and other opoid receptor.

Pharmacokinetics: Pentazocine is well absorbed from the GI tract and SC and IM sites. However it undergoes extensive first pass hepatic metabolism.
